Description

Extensions of basic Jazz improvisation techniques are studied in this unit in order to develop the students facility in the technical and stylistic aspects of improvisation. Ensemble repertoire will be used to provide a basis for these improvisations, with both harmonic and rhythmic aspects of improvisation being considered.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply basic jazz rhythmic concepts in improvisation.
  2. Utilise basic harmonic bebop techniques for improvisation.
  3. Produce improvisations using basic scales and chord tones within basic jazz standard compositions.
  4. Compose solos using basic chromaticism and harmonic bebop concepts.

Unit Content

  1. Syncopation concepts.
  2. Extended basic chord progressions.
  3. Blues devices.
  4. Melodic targeting techniques.
  5. Bebop concepts for melody construction.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU's LMS

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
