This unit develops the student's understanding of the fundamental principles and techniques of aural and their application within a jazz context. The student will demonstrate the acquisition of basic aural skills through an examination of the fundamental musical elements of intervals, scales, chords, rhythm, chord progressions and melody. The vocalisation of material will continue to be developed to support the underpinning theoretical constructs, with singing and dictation being the primary tools for internalising each area of study. Commonalities and specialties of a variety of different musical conventions will be examined and contextualised.
