Description

This unit aims to develop basic instrumental, improvisational, interpretative and technical skills. Students will begin to acquire a practice and performance repertoire based on the post swing era, mainstream and bebop styles. The unit will focus on both individual and group performance skills with an emphasis on presentation.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 4 units from MUS1305, MUS1308, MUS1309, MUS1313

Equivalent Rule

Unit was previously coded MUS1105

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Interpret and create improvised solos over core repertoire using theoretical concepts discussed.
  2. Interpret the basic role of the student's instrument in the Jazz Ensemble.
  3. Memorise and interpret core repertoire from the post swing era, mainstream and bebop styles.
  4. Perform in a small ensemble and solo setting.
  5. Review and discuss musical performances from the post swing era, mainstream and bebop styles.

  1. Aesthetic techniques appropriate to the post swing era, mainstream and bebop styles.
  2. Core repertoire Jazz standards from the post swing era, mainstream and bebop styles.
  3. Improvisation and interaction methods.
  4. Performance presentation from a practical and critical perspective.
  5. Rehearsal conventions and instrumental roles.

Participation in Ensemble, Performance Workshops.
