Description

This unit introduces the student to the diverse musical cultures of the Contemporary Music genre. The convergence of various musical styles may also be explored alongside the study of chronologies in popular music. Basic oral and written communication skills essential for all musicians will be included in this unit.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply basic critical and communication skills.
  2. Articulate the definitive musical and historical events.
  3. Produce written work that conforms with university protocols.
  4. Recognise aurally the definitive musical styles.

Unit Content

  1. Case studies in the Contemporary Music styles being studied.
  2. Music in its cultural context.
  3. Popular music in the 20th Century.
  4. Techniques of critical listening.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
