Description

This unit develops students' understanding of the fundamental aural skills and their application within a contemporary music content. Students will demonstrate the acquisition of basic aural skills including intervals, scales, chords, rhythm, chord progressions and melody. The vocalisation of material will support the underpinning theoretical constructs.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply learned techniques in different musical contexts.
  2. Implement music fundamentals.
  3. Perform basic melodic and rhythmic dictations.
  4. Perform basic sight singing exercises.
  5. Recognise the presence and application of studied material in recorded examples.
  6. Vocalise and identify selected basic intervals, scales, chords, cadences and chord progressions.

  1. Application and recognition of material in recorded examples.
  2. Fundamental harmonic concepts.
  3. Fundamental rhythmic concepts.
  4. Revision and reinforcement of key aural concepts and approaches.
  5. Vocalisation skills, including sight singing.

Students please note: The marks and grades received by students on assessments may be subject to further moderation. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant Board of Examiners.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
