Description

Students develop their instrumental/vocal skills through rehearsals and performances in one or more of the designated ensemble groups they will be assigned to. Emphasis is placed on the acquisition of technical and/or improvisational skills, alongside fundamental skills in musicianship and stylistic understanding. Skills in ensemble playing, teamwork, concert presentation, professional etiquette and the ability to respond to direction are emphasised throughout the unit.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 1 units from MUS1426

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Display an established functional control over the fundamental elements of music ensemble performance, including basic skills in sight-reading.
  2. Rehearse and perform selected repertoire competently in an approved music ensemble.
  3. Apply an appreciation of the related stylistic contexts and concepts of the pieces being performed.
  4. Articulate knowledge about essential concepts and contexts of the music.

Unit Content

  1. Core repertoire (Level 1).
  2. Assigned public performances during the semester.
  3. Ensemble playing skills.
  4. Rehearsal conventions and instrumental roles.
  5. Interpreting and applying aesthetic techniques appropriate to style.
  6. Foundational improvisation and interaction methods.

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECUs LMS

Additional Learning Experience Information

All ensembles perform at least once in public during the semester, either in the University or in the wider community. Students will be required to work in an ensemble to produce and perform musical works. They will be required to engage in constant communication with each other about technical and stylistic issues. Students will be provided with opportunities to practise their performance and/or improvisation skills, with feedback from their peers and their ensemble director.
