In this unit, students develop fundamental instrumental and/or vocal skills through ensemble rehearsals and performances. They participate in one or more ensembles, which may include chamber music groups, choirs, symphony orchestras, music theatre orchestras, operas, new music groups, and other instrumental ensembles. Emphasis is placed on the acquisition of fundamental skills in musicianship, including sight-reading, intonation, phrasing, dynamics, rhythm, and stylistic understanding. Furthermore, students establish skills in ensemble playing, teamwork, concert presentation, professional etiquette, and the ability to respond to directions.
On completion of this unit students should be able to:

Students acquire basic instrumental/vocal skills through rehearsals and performances in one or more of the designated ensemble groups they will be assigned to. Emphasis is placed on the stylistic appreciation of the works being performed, along with the technical skills to perform competently in a music ensemble.

All ensembles perform at least once in public during the semester, either in the University or in the wider community. Students will be required to work in an ensemble to produce and perform musical works. They will be required to engage in constant communication with each other and the conductor about technical and stylistic issues. Students will be provided with opportunities to practise their performance skills, with feedback from their peers and their ensemble director.
