Description

This unit introduces the student to the fundamental techniques of music theory, harmony, and basic composition. Commonalities and specialities of a variety of different musical conventions will be examined. Piano skills will be developed to support and apply the underpinning theoretical constructs.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Analyse basic harmony.
  2. Apply techniques of and composition based on basic harmonic concepts.
  3. Harmonise melodies using basic harmonic language.
  4. Identify and demonstrate an understanding of basic music theory.

Unit Content

  1. Basic composition.
  2. Fundamentals of music.
  3. Music writing.
  4. Musical transcription.
  5. Systems of music theory and music literacy.
