Description

This unit is an introductory survey of the history of western music from the Middle Ages up until the end of the nineteenth century. It explores major stylistic periods and trends, prevalent cultural themes, key compositional and formal devices, significant composers, and representative works. Emphasis is also placed on the acquisition of skills in critical listening, basic research, and written communication.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

1. Aurally identify music from the major style periods of western music.
2. Demonstrate a working knowledge of basic reference tools for research in classical music.
3. Demonstrate familiarity with basic terms and concepts associated with classical music.
4. Demonstrate familiarity with significant composers and their works.
5. Express coherent ideas in written forms.

1. Basic research techniques.
2. Case studies from the major periods in the history of Western Music.
3. Techniques of critical listening.
4. Writing skills.
