Description

This unit introduces students to composing and producing music in the 21st century, asking the question "what is the purpose of music composition?" It explores communicative, narrative and experimental approaches to this issue, through the creation of original works for a range of media and genres. Students also attend a composer workshop where they will hear students composition work, visiting artists and demonstrations.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate collaborative process for working with other media.etc.
  2. Demonstrate introductory composition techniques.
  3. Describe and distinguish between contemporary compositional techniques and concepts.
  4. Evaluate musical performances.
  5. Identify seminal modern composers, composition techniques and recordings.

Unit Content

  1. An introduction to modern composition genres and techniques.
  2. An introduction to the communicative, narrative and experimental purposes of music composition.
  3. Creation of original music for specific media.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
