Description

In this unit, students develop fundamental instrumental and/or vocal skills through ensemble rehearsals and performances. They participate in one or more ensembles, which may include chamber music groups, choirs, symphony orchestras, music theatre orchestras, operas, new music groups, and other instrumental ensembles. Emphasis is placed on the continued improvement of fundamental skills in musicianship, including sight-reading, intonation, phrasing, dynamics, rhythm, and stylistic understanding. Furthermore, students continue to develop skills in ensemble playing, teamwork, concert presentation, professional etiquette, and the ability to respond to directions.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply musical skills to a range of rehearsal and performance projects.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of concert presentation and professional etiquette.
  3. Demonstrate enhanced musicianship skills.
  4. Demonstrate enhanced skills in ensemble playing, and teamwork.
  5. Perform effectively in an instrumental and/or vocal ensemble setting.

Unit Content

  1. Ensemble rehearsals and assigned public performances.
  2. Musical exercises and activities designed to build fundamental skills in musicianship and ensemble playing.
  3. Repertoire selected by the unit coordinator and/or Ensemble Director.

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.

Description

Students establish their fundamental instrumental/vocal skills through rehearsals and performances in one or more of the designated ensemble groups they will be assigned to. Emphasis is placed on the acquisition of technical and musicianship skills as well as stylistic understanding. Fundamental skills in ensemble playing, teamwork, concert presentation, professional etiquette and the ability to respond to direction are emphasised throughout the unit.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Display functional control over the fundamental elements of music ensemble performance, including basic skills in sight-reading.
  2. Display functional control over the fundamental elements of music ensemble performance, including basic skills in sight-reading.
  3. Rehearse and perform selected repertoire competently in an approved music ensemble.
  4. Apply an appreciation of the related stylistic contexts and concepts of the pieces being performed.
  5. Apply teamwork skills to successfully collaborate within group setting.

Additional Learning Experience Information

All ensembles perform at least once in public during the semester, either in the University or in the wider community. Students will be required to work in an ensemble to produce and perform musical works. They will be required to engage in constant communication with each other and the conductor about technical and stylistic issues. Students will be provided with opportunities to practise their performance skills, with feedback from their peers and their ensemble director.
