Description

This unit develops the student's skills in music theory, harmony, composition, arranging, aural and improvisation. Commonalities and specialities of a variety of different musical conventions will be examined. Piano skills will be developed to support and apply the underpinning theoretical constructs.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply harmonic systems.
  2. Apply techniques of composition and improvisation.
  3. Demonstrate aural skills.
  4. Demonstrate intermediate keyboard facility.
  5. Implement music theory conventions.

Unit Content

  1. Analytical systems: chord symbols; figured bass; Roman numeral analysis; and chord progressions.
  2. Arranging and Composition techniques.
  3. Harmonic progression and voice leading.
  4. Harmonisation of melodies.
  5. Improvisation techniques.
  6. Modulation and Forms.
  7. Sight singing.

Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.

Description

In this unit students are introduced to advanced techniques in music notation, representation and typesetting. Students explore alternative software for score-creation and presentation. Students also learn how to score for the human voice and positioning of lyrics for solo and combinations of voices. Historical and contemporary exemplar works in range of contexts and styles are examined. Students engage in reflection upon their assignments through participation in performances.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Appropriately transcribe a MIDI file for instruments and voice.
  2. Apply advanced techniques in music notation, representation and typesetting to score-creation
  3. Create notationally coherent scores selecting appropriate music software and means.
  4. Critically reflect upon concepts and compositional processes in their own and others’ work.
  5. Evaluate and select sustainable strategies to improve well- being and overcome identified barriers to delivering effective performances

Unit Content

  1. Creation of original works for solo voice and voice and instrumental combinations.
  2. An introduction to exemplar works from a range of contexts, styles and eras.
  3. Development of skills in idiomatic writing for voice and instruments
  4. An introduction to documentation of musical composition and creation of neat and notationally correct scores for instruments
  5. An introduction to compositional techniques, and discussion of student’s compositional practice through critical reflection upon and understanding of the context, aesthetics, and the application of concepts and compositional processes in their work
