Description

Jazz improvisation techniques of the bebop and post bop era are studied in this unit in order to develop the students facility in the technical and stylistic aspects of improvisation. Ensemble repertoire will be used to provide a basis for these improvisations, with both harmonic and rhythmic aspects of improvisation being considered.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 4 units from MUS1314, MUS1317, MUS1318, MUS1322

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Build a solo that effectively develops the melodic material of the composition.
  2. Construct improvised melodies that incorporate extended dominant chord harmony.
  3. Construct improvised melodies that incorporate polyrhythmic concepts.
  4. Construct solos that have a diverse rhythmic element on ballad tempos.
  5. Show an understanding of stylistic traits common to the jazz era.

  2. 10-note Bebop scales and techniques.
  3. Bebop Surrounding and Chromatic Approach techniques.
  4. Bebop patterns in 12 keys.
  5. 3/4 concepts.
  6. Ballad Playing - Rubato phrasing, Triplets and Double-time.
  7. The Half-whole scale.
  8. Melodic Development within improvisation.
