Description

Jazz improvisation techniques of the Bebop and Post-bop era are studied in this unit in order to develop students facility in the technical and stylistic aspects of improvisation. Medium complexity level bebop repertoire will be used as the basis for these improvisations, extending harmonic and rhythmic ability within improvisation.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Evaluate the levels of harmonic tension within improvisations.
  2. Construct solos that have a diverse rhythmic element on ballad tempos.
  3. Compose logical solos using extended dominant chord harmony.
  4. Apply basic polyrhythmic concepts.

Unit Content

  1. Chord extensions and implications to melody construction.
  2. Ballad Playing - Rubato phrasing, Triplets and Double-time rhythmic devices.
  3. Improvised incorporation of the half-whole diminished scale.
  4. Basic polyrhythmic concepts.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
