Description

This unit enables students to further improve their instrumental, improvisational, interpretive and technical skills. The Bebop Jazz style will be studied and students will begin to plan and manage a practice and performance repertoire. The unit will focus on the continued development of both individual and group performance skills with an emphasis on presentation.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 4 units from MUS1314, MUS1317, MUS1318, MUS1322

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply appropriate rehearsal practices.
  2. Construct improvised solos over core repertoire implementing theoretical concepts discussed.
  3. Demonstrate the role of the students instrument in the Jazz Ensemble.
  4. Memorize and implement core repertoire from the bebop and latin styles.
  5. Perform in a small ensemble and solo setting.
  6. Produce appropriate critical reviews of musical performances.

Unit Content

  1. Apply aesthetic techniques appropriate to the bebop and latin styles.
  2. Demonstrate conventions and instrumental roles appropriate to the bebop latin style.
  3. Established improvisation and interaction methods.
  4. Jazz standards from the bebop era.
  5. Produce performances from a practical and critical perspective.

Participation in Ensemble, Performance Workshops.
