Description

This unit aims to further develop proficiency in instrumental, improvisational, interpretive and technical skills. Repertoire from the Bebop and Hard-Bop eras will be studied and the students will continue to plan and manage a practice routine and performance repertoire. This unit will also focus on further development of individual performance skills with an emphasis on presentation and critical evaluation.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 4 units from MUS2305, MUS2308, MUS2309, MUS2313

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Analyse and compare musical performances to further develop critical thinking skills.
  2. Demonstrate proficient instrumental technique on the students principal instrument.
  3. Demonstrate the technical and interactive skills required to construct improvised solos across the appropriate repertoire.
  4. Devise and perform a recital program.
  5. Interpret the ensemble repertoire from the Bebop and Hard-Bop eras.
  6. Maintain an effective practice routine.

Unit Content

  1. Ensemble core repertoire Bebop and Hard-Bop compositions.
  2. Intermediate jazz stylistic concepts, techniques and interaction methods related to Bebop and Hard-Bop repertoire.
  3. Intermediate scales and arpeggios related to Bebop and Hard-Bop repertoire.
  4. Intermediate sight-reading exercises.
  5. Performance presentation related to second year jazz recital assessment.
