Description

Jazz improvisation techniques of the post bop era and beyond are studied in this unit in order to develop the students facility in the technical and stylistic aspects of improvisation. Ensemble repertoire will be used to provide a basis for these improvisations, with both harmonic and rhythmic aspects of improvisation being considered.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 4 units from MUS2305, MUS2308, MUS2309, MUS2313

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Construct improvised melodies that incorporate advanced polyrhythmic concepts.
  2. Construct improvised melodies that incorporate further extended dominant chord harmony.
  3. Construct solos that have a diverse rhythmic element across various tempos.
  4. Perform effectively in a solo setting.
  5. Show an understanding of stylistic traits common to the post bop era.

  4. Major Pentatonics.
  5. Minor Scale Tone Harmony.

Ensemble repertoire will be used to provide a basis for these improvisations, with both harmonic and rhythmic aspects of improvisation being considered.

  1. Space and the "Play/Rest" approach.
  2. Controlling phrase lengths and rhythmic density/activity.
  3. Minor Scale Tone Harmony and the Minor ii-V7-i.
  4. Rhythm Changes and variations.
  5. Alternate Blues changes.
  6. 3/4 Hemiolas.
  7. Quarter and 8th note manipulation.
  8. Bebop patterns in 12 keys.
