Description

This unit enables students to further improve their instrumental, improvisational, interpretive and technical skills. Students will also be given the opportunity to create new musical interpretations of designated repertoire. The Bebop, Hard-Bop and Latin Jazz styles will be studied and students will continue to manage and plan a practice and performance repertoire. The unit will be centred on the continued development of both individual and group performance skills with an emphasis on presentation and critical evaluation.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 4 units from MUS2305, MUS2308, MUS2309, MUS2313

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Compose original works for the Jazz ensemble.
  2. Construct and develop improvised solos over core repertoire using theoretical concepts discussed.
  3. Construct new interpretations of designated repertoire and original compositions.
  4. Demonstrate the instrumental skills required for performance in a small ensemble and solo setting.
  5. Memorize compositions from the Bebop, Hard-Bop and Latin Jazz repertoire.
  6. Produce and perform a recital program.

Unit Content

  1. Competent skills in improvisation and interaction methods.
  2. Compositions from the Bebop, Hard-Bop and Latin Jazz repertoire.
  3. Interpretive aesthetic techniques relevant to the Hard-Bop and Post-Bop Jazz styles.
  4. Performance presentation from a practical and critical perspective.
  5. Rehearsal conventions and instrumental roles distinguishing the Hard-Bop and Post-Bop Jazz styles.
