Description

Instrumental skills of a moderate complexity on a second instrument will be group taught in order to provide support for the wider course areas. This unit will also provide students with industry-ready, relevant knowledge towards diversifying their musical skill set. Students will begin with technical work of a moderate complexity, then move toward acquiring accompaniment or harmonic/melodic/rhythmic proficiency using specific tools of a moderate complexity appropriate to the instrument of second study.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Acquire moderately complex technical skills on a second instrument.
  2. Play moderately complex accompaniment/melodic/rhythmic or harmonic patterns on a second instrument.
  3. Apply moderately complex musical skills to a musical problem or a musical situation using the second study instrument.
  4. Understand the role and need of a diverse skill set within the music industry.
  5. Understand the construction and structure of relevant musical styles appropriate to the second instrument.

Unit Content

  1. Moderately complex technique skills applied to a second study instrument.
  2. Play moderately complex rudiments or drills on a second study instrument.
  3. Perform moderately complex Rhythmic or Melodic devices on a second study instrument.
  4. Applying moderately complex Harmonic or Accompaniment devices to a second study instrument.
  5. Stylistic awareness and considerations of musical style.
  6. Nuances and expression relevant to musical styles on a second study instrument.
  7. Applying moderately complex knowledge of a second instrument towards broader musical goals.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
