Description

In this unit, students consolidate technical and interpretative skills on their instrument/voice while taking a proactive role in relation to repertoire choice and individual expression. In addition, students develop strategies to avoid performance-related injuries and improve their general wellbeing while continuing to develop their aural skills in streamed classes.

Prerequisite Rule

Must have passed MUS1362 (Jazz Principal Study 2).

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply strategies to improve technical and interpretative skills in the performance of musical works and improvisations.
  2. Plan and extend performance repertoire.
  3. Propose and enact ideas for solving technical and interpretive challenges in performance.
  4. Evaluate and select sustainable strategies to improve wellbeing and overcome identified barriers to delivering effective performances.
  5. Aurally recognise an increasingly more difficult range of chords, chord progressions, and melodic lines.

  1. Solving technical problems.
  2. Repertoire research skills.
  3. Style and interpretation.
  4. Performance wellness.
  5. Aural recognition of extended chords, intervals, melodies, and complex time signatures.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students are assigned a principal study instrumental/vocal teacher and undertake a series of lessons during the semester. Students also attend workshops, aural classes and take a module focusing on the health and wellbeing of the artist. Students also undertake projects with year groups from all streams.

Academic Integrity

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
