Description

The early jazz artists encountered hardship and social injustice, but rose above these challenges to develop African influenced music into a new American artform. This unit focuses on these developments, orientated towards the major musical innovations, definitive stylistic characteristics, and external musical influences. Seminal jazz artists like Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington and Mary Lou Williams, and bebop and harbop artists such as Charlie Parker, Sarah Vaughan and Miles Davis will be investigated. Landmark albums of the period will form a focal point in a podcast presentation, allowing students to contextualise and analyse key influences in the development of the music.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Articulate the musical and socio-cultural conditions that created and impacted the jazz industry from its beginnings to 1959.
  2. Analyse key recordings, situating them within an historical and cultural context.
  3. Produce a podcast about an artist from the genre.

  1. Representative music for study and analysis.
  2. Recognising the definitive Jazz styles from its beginnings to 1959.
  3. Jazz and its cultural landscape.
  4. Finding and using copyrighted media and publishing work online.
  5. Audio presentation skills.
  6. Podcasts.

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
