Description

In this unit students will develop intermediate-level instrumental skills through ensemble rehearsals and public performances. Students will work towards the acquisition of intermediate skills in ensemble playing. Each student will also integrate their individual programme of study that extends into their ensemble performance.

Students must pass 1 units from MUS1428

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply theoretical , aural and performance skills as required by level 3 repertoire.
  2. Critically evaluate musical performances.
  3. Demonstrate skills necessary to perform level 3 repertoire from memory.
  4. Perform and interpret effective level 3 repertoire in an ensemble.

Unit Content

  1. Assigned public performance during the semester.
  2. Ensemble playing skills.
  3. Project organisation and collaborative learning methods.
  4. Rehearsal conventions and instrumental roles.
  5. Rehearsal techniques.

Description

The focus of this unit is on extending ensemble performance opportunities and building repertoire. Skills in the elements of ensemble performance, such as sight reading, interpreting and analysing written music, provide the groundwork for confident and convincing performances. Skills in ensemble playing, teamwork, concert presentation, professional etiquette and the ability to respond to direction will be further extended in this unit.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Display well developed instrumental and/or vocal skills through more complex rehearsals and performance repertoire.
  2. Apply listening skills and perform confidently as a contributing member of a group.
  3. Perform effectively within an ensemble performance, accurately sight read, and interpret and analyse written music.
  4. Apply analytical skills and critical approaches that are relevant to music ensemble performance.

Unit Content

  1. Core repertoire (Level 2).
  2. Assigned public performances during the semester.
  3. Ensemble playing skills.
  4. Rehearsal conventions and instrumental roles.
  5. Interpreting and applying aesthetic techniques appropriate to style.
  6. Intermediate improvisation and interaction methods.

Additional Learning Experience Information

All ensembles perform at least once in public during the semester, either in the University or in the wider community. Students will be required to work in an ensemble to produce and perform musical works. They will be required to engage in constant communication with each other about technical and stylistic issues. Students will be provided with opportunities to practise their performance and/or improvisation skills, with feedback from their peers and their ensemble director.
