Description

The focus of this unit is developing ensemble performance opportunities and building repertoire. Development of skills in the elements of ensemble performance, such as sight reading, interpreting and analysing written music, provide the groundwork for confident and convincing performances. Skills in ensemble playing, teamwork, concert presentation, professional etiquette and the ability to respond to direction will be further developed in this unit.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Display well developed instrumental and/or vocal skills through more complex rehearsals and performance repertoire.
  2. Apply listening skills and perform confidently as a contributing member of a group.
  3. Perform effectively within an ensemble performance, accurately sight read, and interpret and analyse written music.
  4. Apply analytical skills and critical approaches that are relevant to music ensemble performance.

Unit Content

  1. Ensemble rehearsals and assigned public performances.
  2. Repertoire selected by the unit coordinator and/or Ensemble Director.
  3. Musical exercises and activities designed to develop skills in musicianship and ensemble playing.
  4. Develop performance repertoire and techniques.
  5. Stylistic contexts and concepts of the music being performed.
  6. Analytical skills and approaches to ensemble performance.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.

Additional Learning Experience Information

All ensembles perform at least once in public during the semester, either in the University or in the wider community. Students will be required to work in an ensemble to produce and perform musical works. They will be required to engage in constant communication with each other and the conductor about technical and stylistic issues. Students will be provided with opportunities to practise their performance skills, with feedback from their peers and their ensemble director.
