Description

This unit introduces the student to a range of approaches to the structuring of music compositions. The unit focuses on analytical models of the functioning of structure, as well as current thought about how structure is perceived. Students also attend a composer workshop where they will hear students' composition work, visiting artists and demonstrations.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 1 units from MUS2607

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Analyse the structure of musical works.
  2. Demonstrate collaborative process for working with other media.
  3. Identify seminal works in the development of musical structure.
  4. Understand and demonstrate the application of a variety of musical structures to an original composition.

  1. An introduction to the compositional manipulation musical structure.
  2. Analytical models of the functioning of structure.
  3. Creation of original music for specific media.
  4. The role of music perception in compositional structure.
