Description
This unit introduces students to German prosody, the authentic production of German speech sounds and the International Phonetic Alphabet as applied to German.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this unit students should be able to:
- IPA transcription
- Idiomatic translation
- Original German text
- Prepare a German song text using a three or four-line phonetic transcription system: Original German text; IPA transcription; Word-for-word translation; and Idiomatic translation.
- Read and write German texts in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).
- Recognise and correctly pronounce German vowels and consonants.
- Recognise and correctly use German syllabification and stress.
- Understand and analyse German word structure.
- Word-for-word translation

- German vowels and consonants.
- German word structure (prefixes, suffixes, word elements, compound words).
- Introduction to German song text preparation.
- The symbols of the International Phonetic Alphabet as applied to German.
