Description

This unit reinforces and adds to students' knowledge and understanding of German prosody, the authentic production of German speech sounds, and the International Phonetic Alphabet as applied to German.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Perform a German song demonstrating correct pronunciation, appropriate phrasing, an understanding of the text, whilst maintaining flexibility, artistry and expression.
  2. Prepare a German song text using a three-or-four-line phonetic transcription system.
  3. Read aloud from a German song text.
  4. Read and write German song texts in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).
  5. Recognise and correctly pronounce German speech sounds.

Unit Content

  1. Advanced song preparation, including transcribing and translating excerpts from the German song literature.
  2. Reading aloud from German song texts.
  3. Revision of all German speech sounds.
  4. Revision of the symbols of the International Phonetic Alphabet as applied to German.
  5. Song performance and interpretation.
