Description

This unit will focus on the development of musical strategies for the performance of complex harmonic, rhythmic and melodic jazz repertoire. The study of intermediate to advanced instrumental, improvisational, interpretive and technical skills will be a priority. Repertoire from the Post Bop and Modern Jazz eras will be studied and the students will be encouraged to begin developing their own sound. Students will continue to evaluate and develop a practice routine and performance repertoire. This unit will also focus on further development of individual performance skills with an emphasis on presentation and critical evaluation.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 4 units from MUS2314, MUS2317, MUS2318, MUS2322

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Analyse and develop technical exercises appropriate to ensemble repertoire.
  2. Compare musical performances to further develop critical thinking skills.
  3. Differentiate and Interpret the ensemble repertoire from the Post Bop and Modern Jazz eras.
  4. Formulate an effective practice routine.
  5. Outline measurable progress in intermediate to advanced instrumental technique on the students principal instrument.
  6. Transcribe and analyse solos on complex jazz forms.

Unit Content

  1. Development of technical abilities.
  2. Ensemble core repertoire Post Bop and Modern Jazz compositions.
  3. Intermediate to advanced jazz stylistic concepts, techniques and interaction methods related to Post-Bop and Modern Jazz repertoire.
  4. Intermediate to advanced scales and arpeggios related to Post Bop and Modern Jazz repertoire.
  5. Intermediate to advanced sight-reading exercises.
  6. Performance presentation from a practical and critical perspective.

Instrumental lessons and performance workshops.
