Modern Jazz improvisation techniques are studied in this unit in order to develop the students facility in the technical and stylistic aspects of improvisation. Jazz standard repertoire will be used to provide a basis for these improvisations, with both harmonic and rhythmic aspects of improvisation being considered.
On completion of this unit students should be able to:

Modern jazz improvisation concepts are studied in this unit in order to further expand the students harmonic, melodic and rhythmic ability within improvisation. The materials studied in this unit will enable students to perform on complex harmonic forms typical of modern jazz compositions, and develop individual approaches to jazz improvisation.
