Description

This unit will concentrate on designing a recital program that reflects concepts and techniques studied thus far. The unit will also focus on the further development of musical strategies for the performance of complex harmonic, rhythmic and melodic jazz repertoire. Repertoire from the Modern Jazz, Fusion, Avant-Garde and Free Improvisation styles will be studied and the students will continue to plan and manage a practice routine and performance repertoire. This unit will also focus on further development of individual performance skills with an emphasis on presentation and critical evaluation.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 3 units from MUS3305, MUS3308, MUS3321

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate advanced instrumental technique on the students principal instrument.
  2. Design an effective practice routine.
  3. Evaluate and justify musical performances to further develop critical thinking skills.
  4. Evaluate and justify the application of improvisational methods on complex jazz forms.
  5. Integrate and apply the ensemble repertoire from Modern Jazz, Fusion, Avant-Garde and Free Improvisation styles.
  6. Plan, design and perform a recital program.

Unit Content

  1. Advanced jazz stylistic concepts, techniques and interaction methods related to Modern Jazz, Fusion, Avant-Garde and Free Improvisation repertoire.
  2. Advanced scales and arpeggios related to Modern Jazz, Fusion, Avant-Garde and Free Improvisation repertoire.
  3. Advanced sight-reading exercises.
  4. Ensemble core repertoire Modern Jazz, Fusion, Avant-Garde and Free Improvisation compositions.
  5. Performance presentation related to third year jazz recital assessment.

Instrumental lessons and performance workshops.
