Description
This unit aims to develop advanced instrumental, improvisational, interpretive and technical skills, and students will continue to plan and manage a practice routine and performance repertoire. The unit will also concentrate on designing a recital program that reflects concepts and techniques studied thus far. The unit will continue to focus on further development of individual performance skills with an emphasis on presentation. To meet the participation criteria, students must pass the Technical Proficiency Level 3 exam.
Prerequisite Rule
Students must pass MUS3305
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this unit students should be able to:
- Demonstrate advanced instrumental technique on the students principal instrument.
- Demonstrate the skills required to evaluate musical performances.
- Design an effective practice routine.
- Integrate and apply the technical and interactive skills required to create improvised solos across the appropriate repertoire.
- Plan, design and perform a recital program.
Unit Content
- Advanced jazz stylistic concepts, techniques and interaction methods.
- Advanced scales and arpeggios.
- Advanced sight-reading exercises.
- Performance presentation related to third year jazz recital assessment.
Learning Experience
Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.

GS1 GRADING SCHEMA 1 Used for standard coursework units
Students please note: The marks and grades received by students on assessments may be subject to further moderation. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant Board of Examiners.
Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
