Description

This unit will continue to develop advanced improvisation skills and techniques for use in a contemporary improvised music situation. It will focus on modern rhythmic and harmonic devices and will be assessed on the ability of the student to improvise using these devices.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 3 units from MUS3305, MUS3308, MUS3321

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Create cadenzas.
  2. Improvise on odd meter song forms.
  3. Improvise over modal song forms using advanced harmonic structures.
  4. Improvise using diatonic interval structures.
  5. Incorporate advanced substitution techniques.

  1. Countdown turnaround.
  2. Diatonic 4th interval improvisation.
  3. Free playing.
  4. Modal improvisation techniques.
  5. Multiple meter song forms.
