Description

This unit will concentrate on the development of musical strategies for the performance of complex harmonic, rhythmic and melodic Jazz repertoire. The study of advanced instrumental, improvisational, interpretive and technical skills is a focus. The Post-Bop and Modern Jazz styles will be studied and students will be encouraged to develop their own sound. The unit will be centred on the continued development of both individual and group performance skills with an emphasis on analysis, presentation and critical evaluation.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 4 units from MUS2314, MUS2317, MUS2318, MUS2322

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Analyse and create improvised solos over complex jazz forms.
  2. Compose original works for the solo artist and Jazz ensemble with techniques studied.
  3. Devise new interpretations of designated repertoire, projects, arrangements and original compositions.
  4. Memorise core repertoire from the Post-Bop and Modern Jazz period.
  5. Outline, workshop and perform a recital program.
  6. Perform with advanced instrumental skill in a small ensemble and solo setting.

  1. Aesthetic techniques relevant to the Post-Bop and Modern Jazz styles.
  2. Development of sound.
  3. Jazz standards from the Post-Bop and Modern Jazz and extended repertoire.
  4. Performance presentation from a practical and critical perspective.
  5. Proficient improvisation and interaction methods.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Participation in ensemble and performance workshops.
