Description

Effective ensemble performance that demonstrates both the ability to lead and to follow is emphasised in this unit. Leadership and collaborative skills are developed within the ensemble as players discuss musical ideas in rehearsal. Students explore the interpretation of standard repertoire and the development of new interpretations using more advanced skills in both individual and group performance.

Students must pass 1 units from MUS2428

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Consistently display the requirements of ensemble leadership in musical ensembles.
  2. Collaborate with other players on the interpretation and communication of musical ideas.
  3. Interpret stylistic characteristics unique to the specialised ensemble.
  4. Utilise appropriate key themes that relate to the repertoire of the student's chosen ensemble.

Unit Content

  1. Core repertoire (Level 3).
  2. Assigned public performance during the semester.
  3. Ensemble playing and arranging skills.
  4. Rehearsal conventions and instrumental roles.
  5. Musical direction and ensemble leadership.
  6. Interpreting and applying aesthetic techniques appropriate to style.
  7. Intermediate to advanced improvisation and interaction methods.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.

Additional Learning Experience Information

All ensembles perform at least once in public during the semester, either in the University or in the wider community. Students will be required to work in an ensemble to produce and perform musical works. They will be required to engage in constant communication with each other about technical and stylistic issues. Students will be provided with opportunities to practise their performance and/or improvisation skills, with feedback from their peers and their ensemble director.
