Description

In this unit students will continue to develop advanced instrumental skills through ensemble rehearsals and public performances. Students will demonstrate skills in ensemble playing at an advanced level. The development of leadership skills in an ensemble setting will be a focal point. Each student will also integrate an individual programme of study that extends the depth and breadth of their studies.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply advanced musical skills to a range of complex repertoire.
  2. Demonstrate acceptable progress in memorising and interpreting the level 3 Core repertoire.
  3. Demonstrate ensemble leadership skills.
  4. Implement musical skills at level three.

  2. Ensemble playing and arranging skills.
  3. Project organisation and collaborative learning methods.
  4. Rehearsal conventions and instrumental roles.
  5. Rehearsal leadership techniques.

Description

Students interpret standard repertoire and create new interpretations as appropriate, using more advanced skills in both individual and group performance as they perform chosen works in public concerts. Leadership skills and the ability to collaborate with other players on the interpretation and communication of musical ideas in performance and rehearsal are developed as the selected ensembles perform repertoire convincingly and professionally in public concerts.

  1. Apply leadership skills in musical ensembles.
  2. Collaborate effectively with group members on the interpretation and communication of musical ideas in performance and rehearsal.
  3. Perform selected repertoire confidently in a public concert.
  4. Articulate key themes that relate to the repertoire of the student's chosen ensemble.

Additional Learning Experience Information

All ensembles perform at least once in public during the semester, either in the University or in the wider community. Students will be required to work in an ensemble to produce and perform musical works. They will be required to engage in constant communication with each other about technical and stylistic issues. Students will be provided with opportunities to practise their performance and/or improvisation skills, with feedback from their peers and their ensemble director.
