Description

In this unit students learn to improvise in a variety of musical styles. Emphasis is placed on developing fluency on their instrument, both as a soloist and as an ensemble participant.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Create improvisations in response to a text or an image.
  2. Improvise in tonal and post-tonal styles.
  3. Improvise over a ground bass.
  4. Perform on their instrument with freedom and spontaneity.
  5. Perform selected aleatoric scores.

Unit Content

  1. Developing themes.
  2. Listening, interacting and cueing in a ensemble situation.
  3. Playing over chord changes (ground bass & Jazz).
  4. Study of recorded improvisations.
  5. Working with harmony.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Lectures, workshops, and practical demonstrations.
