Description

This unit examines key elements of Western Art Music from the Middle Ages to the end of the Baroque period. Students learn to aurally identify a wide range of musical styles and genres. In addition, they explore a series of set works from 'the inside', developing their knowledge of music analysis, compositional technique, paleography and notation. Students also learn to 'embody' certain works in the same way as musicians of the past, specifically by playing and singing, often from memory, portions of the works set for study.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Correctly identify, through sound or score study, key elements of music from 800-1750.
  2. Critically analyse representative musical works.
  3. Explain important musical concepts, ideas and terms as they apply to a wide range of music.
  4. Play and sing select music from the period with appropriate performance practices.
  5. Read music from older notations and transcribe and analyse archival documents.

Unit Content

  1. The study of representative works of significant composers, and the cultural milieu in which they are situated.
  2. Work with archival materials and primary sources.
  3. Memory, improvisation, performance practices.

The unit content is studied through various different lenses: listening; performing; editing; contextualising primary-source work; and, singing and sight-singing (including solemnising in the manner of a Renaissance performer).

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
