Description

This unit aims to foster advanced original compositions from students, with a deeper concern for original ideas. It also moves toward an awareness of ones own creative process. The unit looks at compositions from contemporary jazz artists that exhibit advanced harmonic, melodic and rhythmic techniques, yet also those that embrace flexibility within traditional ensemble roles. Students produce creative work through completing pieces, various exercises and work-shopping of their latest ideas. The unit also aims to support the compositional aspect of the end of year recital.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Complete score reductions of large ensemble pieces.
  2. Compose advanced jazz pieces showing a concern for and awareness of original ideas and creative approaches.
  3. Compose pieces embracing flexibility with tempo, rubato and non-traditional ensemble roles and textures.
  4. Understand advanced harmonic, melodic and rhythmic techniques of modern jazz compositions in various idioms.
