Description

Approaches to improvisation and ensemble playing drawn from recorded music of the past 10 years will be discussed and adapted to course repertoire and original materials. Arrangements within these styles will be used as a foundation for improvisations.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 3 units from MUS3313, MUS3316, MUS3322

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Improvise within modern ensemble settings.
  2. Incorporate modern harmonic devices into improvisations and arrangements.
  3. Incorporate modern rhythmic devices into improvisations and arrangements.
  4. Understand the different values of various modern jazz ensemble styles.

Unit Content

  1. Discussions on modern jazz direction.
  2. Number patterns.
  3. Pure interval improvisation.
  4. Space and interaction.
  5. The music of Paul Motian.
  6. The unique methods of the Wayne Shorter Quartet.
