Description

Modern approaches to jazz performance and modern improvisation techniques will be discussed and adapted to original material and contemporary jazz tunes.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Improvise within modern ensemble settings.
  2. Incorporate modern harmonic devices into improvisations and arrangements.
  3. Incorporate modern rhythmic devices into improvisations and arrangements.

Unit Content

  1. Advanced Harmonic topics for Jazz Improvisation and Composition.
  2. Advanced Rhythmic Topics for Jazz Improvisation and Composition
  3. Advanced hemiolas for improvisation.
  4. Free jazz approaches to improvisation.
  5. Interval structures for improvisation.
  6. Odd metre improvisation approaches.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
