Description

Approaches to improvisation and ensemble playing drawn from recorded music of the past 10 years will be discussed and adapted to course repertoire and original materials. Arrangements within these styles will be used as a foundation for improvisations. Analysis of harmonic and rhythmic complexities within modern jazz improvised solos will be undertaken.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 3 units from MUS3313, MUS3316, MUS3322

Replaces MUS4307

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Understand the different values of various modern jazz ensemble styles.
  2. Improvise within modern ensemble settings.
  3. Incorporate modern rhythmic devices into improvisations and arrangements.
  4. Incorporate modern harmonic devices into improvisations and arrangements.
  5. Knowledge of modern jazz devices through analysis of improvised solos.

Unit Content

  1. Discussions on modern jazz direction.
  2. The unique methods of the Wayne Shorter Quartet.
  3. The music of Paul Motian.
  4. Space and interaction.
  5. Number patterns.
  6. Pure interval improvisation.
  7. Analysis methods for understanding harmonic and melodic complexities within modern jazz solos.
