Description

Students prepare selected repertoire for public concerts. Emphasis is placed on the cultivation of professional-level musical skills, as well as understanding the performance disciplines and expectations of the music. Collaboration and the communication of ideas within the ensemble form the basis of the interpretation and the stylistic presentation of the works. Students are expected to take an active interest in researching and analysing their own musical ideas.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 1 units from MUS3428

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Perform advanced levels of musicianship within ensemble performances.
  2. Confidently lead ensemble performances, contributing to the development of collaborative musical interpretations.
  3. Investigate relevant performance practices for studied repertoire in ensemble performance.
  4. Engage with various theoretical or conceptual frameworks that relate to ensemble performance practices and rehearsal techniques.

Unit Content

  1. Recital repertoire.
  2. Assigned public performances during the semester.
  3. Ensemble playing and arranging skills.
  4. Rehearsal conventions and instrumental roles.
  5. Musical direction and ensemble leadership.
  6. Interpreting and applying aesthetic techniques appropriate to style.
  7. Advanced improvisation and interaction methods.
  8. Advanced improvisation and interaction methods.

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECUs LMS

Additional Learning Experience Information

All ensembles perform at least once in public during the semester, either in the University or in the wider community. Students will be required to work in an ensemble to produce and perform musical works. They will be required to engage in constant communication with each other about technical and stylistic issues. Students will be provided with opportunities to practise their performance and/or improvisation skills, with feedback from their peers and their ensemble director.
