Description

Students present a full-length public recital featuring significant works for their instrument or voice, demonstrating advanced levels of musicianship in ensemble performance. Students are expected to take an active role in the collaborative interpretation and communication of ideas, based on an understanding of the stylistic contexts of the music being performed as a result of thorough preparation, research and analysis of the selected musical genres.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 1 units from MUS4406

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Perform selected repertoire in a public concert with professional levels of musicianship and musical competence.
  2. Professionally lead an ensemble to a successful performance.
  3. Apply relevant performance practices for studied repertoire in ensemble performance.
  4. Reflect critically and constructively on own performance and the performance of others using an appropriate theoretical or conceptual framework.

Unit Content

  1. Recital repertoire.
  2. Assigned public performances during the semester.
  3. Ensemble playing and arranging skills.
  4. Rehearsal conventions and instrumental roles.
  5. Musical direction and ensemble leadership.
  6. Interpreting and applying aesthetic techniques appropriate to style.
  7. Advanced improvisation and interaction methods.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.

Additional Learning Experience Information

All ensembles perform at least once in public during the semester, either in the University or in the wider community. Students will be required to work in an ensemble to produce and perform musical works. They will be required to engage in constant communication with each other about technical and stylistic issues. Students will be provided with opportunities to practise their performance and/or improvisation skills, with feedback from their peers and their ensemble director.
