Description

In this subject, students study harmonic techniques as employed by composers from the twentieth century. Your studies will be supplemented by practical assignments, the majority of which are compositions, where you will have the opportunity to employ these techniques. There will also be readings and listening to be completed outside of class.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 1 units from MUS2515, MUS2529

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of compositional techniques as employed by composers from the beginning of the twentieth century until the Second World War.
2. Exemplify their understanding of twentieth-century techniques through the creation of stylistically appropriate original compositions.
3. Identify and contextualise the techniques of seminal composers from the twentieth century.

Unit Content

1. Contextual discussion of the ideological basis for the development of Pre-War techniques.
2. Methodology for creating original compositions demonstrating stylistically appropriate techniques.
3. Techniques employed by composers from the beginning of the twentieth century until the Second World War.
