Description

This unit introduces students to the pronunciation of Standard American and British English speech sounds and to the International Phonetic Alphabet as applied to these Englishes.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

1. Correctly pronounce British English and Standard American vowels and consonants.
2. Perform an English song demonstrating correct pronunciation, appropriate phrasing and an understanding of the text.
3. Read and write English texts in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) as applied to British English and Standard American English.
4. Understand and use English stress and syllabification.

1. British English and Standard American vowels and consonants.
2. English Stress and Syllabification.
3. Song performance and interpretation.
4. The symbols of the International Phonetic Alphabet as applied to British English and Standard American English.
