Description

This unit will enable students to understand their future role as a Registered Nurse within the Australian health care system both in its current state; and as it adjusts to the changing Australian demographic. In order to achieve this, students will need to understand the role of the Registered Nurse as bound by professional regulation, and how this relates to other nursing and health professional roles. This unit will introduce the need to work within interprofessional teams in order to provide effective and efficient services in a manner that is responsive to the changing health care needs of the Australian population.

Prerequisite Rule

Only students studying courses C33, Y61, Y76, Y19 or Y79 can enrol in this unit.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Describe the necessary requirements for effective team work and its contribution to interprofessional practice.
  2. Reflect upon their future role as a Registered Nurse in response to the changing health care needs of a population.
  3. Describe the role of the nurse as a member of the multidisciplinary team in the health service industry.
  4. Access and utilise information about nurse regulation to inform decision making in practice.
  5. Explain the relationship between self- regulation and their responsibilities of accountability and autonomy.

  2. Regulated and unregulated health workers: Roles and responsibilities.
  3. Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council: Competencies for the Registered and Enrolled Nurse, codes of practice.
  4. Introduction to population health.
  5. Teams and teamwork.
  6. Scope of Nursing Practice for the Registered Nurse.
  7. The Australian Health Care System.
  8. Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia: Self-regulating professions and relationship to personal accountability.
  9. Health care teams.
  10. Overview of the changing health demographics in Australia.

Additional Learning Experience Information

In this unit, students access and use a variety of digital learning materials to prepare for and engage in class discussion and learning activities. Group discussion and analysis of case studies and audio visual materials in both face-to-face and online formats, allow development of analytical and decision making skills and provide opportunities to recognise scope of practice.
