Description

In this unit the notions of person and family-centred care and the role of the nurse as an interdisciplinary team member in the provision of individualised care are explored. To achieve this, opportunities are provided for students to explore the role of nurses in promoting healing and healthy environments for patients and their families. Key concepts to be addressed include assessment and management of patient function and risk with consideration of developmental stage, culture and promotion of patient comfort.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass two units NCS1101 and NCS1102

Only students studying courses C33, Y61, Y76, Y19 or Y79 can enrol in this unit.

Equivalent Rule

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply developmental theories when planning interventions in the care of clients.
  2. Demonstrate competence in medication dosage calculations relevant to Stage 2.
  3. Distinguish between pharmacological and complementary therapies and the application of both to selected clinical situations.
  4. Explain the variables influencing health and illness beliefs and behaviours across the lifespan.
  5. Interpret external and internal factors that promote family health.
  6. Plan, deliver and evaluate a client teaching session that is culturally and age appropriate.

  1. The provision of nursing care across the lifespan with consideration of cultural diversity.
  2. Psychosocial considerations in providing clinical care.
  3. Introduction to care planning and critical thinking.
  4. Client teaching & health promotion.
