Description

This unit facilitates the transition from the role of nursing student to Registered Nurse. Emphasis is placed on factors that contribute to the scope of practice of Registered Nurses in Australia, initial employment, including leadership and management skills, as well as the obligations in maintaining registration and professional competence.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass NPP2201.

Only students studying courses C33, Y61, Y76, Y19 or Y79 can enrol in this unit.

Equivalent Rule

Unit was previously coded NNI3204, NNI3603.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Construct a continued professional competence/development plan.
  2. Describe the professional corporate and clinical governance structures that define the role of the Registered Nurse.
  3. Explore the aspects of role transition for the novice Registered Nurse.
  4. Develop a personal plan of entry to practice.
  5. Construct an application for a position that utilises sound argument and is supported by evidence.

  2. Continuing competence and performance appraisal.
  3. Reality shock and reflective practice.
  4. Framing and substantiating an argument of competence.
  5. Applying for a position, application framing, writing plus interview.
  6. Professional development and specialisation.
  7. Professional, corporate and clinical governance structures.

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students use a variety of digital learning materials to prepare for and engage in online and in-class discussions. Group discussion, case study analysis and learning activities are used in tutorials and online discussions to help students with the challenges of transition to the role of the registered nurse.
