Description

This unit will examine normal age related changes to physical and psychological health as well as commonly experienced deviations from healthy ageing. Health assessments of elderly people, relevant interventions and approaches to care will be addressed from a practical and a theoretical perspective.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Analyse the demographic profile of the Australian ageing population
  2. Evaluate and apply theoretical knowledge of normal ageing processes to health assessments and health promotion strategies.
  3. Determine deviations from healthy ageing during the assessment process.
  4. Critically review appropriate interventions and approaches to promote health and/or wellbeing in an older person.
  5. Synthesise a range of health interventions for maximum therapeutic benefit for the older person

  3. Changes in structure and function associated with normal ageing
  4. Promoting health in the older person.
  5. Health assessment of the older person
  6. Common deviations from healthy ageing including delirium, dementia and depression
  7. Therapeutic health care interventions and approaches to care of the older person
  8. Culturally sensitive care of the older person
