Description

This unit will explore the specialist Children and Young People's nurses' role in assessing, planning and implementing care underpinned by a holistic philosophy. In addition, concepts of managing the assessment of the deteriorating child in local, rural and remote areas will be explored.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Justify the principles of conducting a comprehensive assessment on all ages of children from newborn to adolescence.
  2. Critically analyse advocacy in relation to legal and ethical issues of children's and young people's nursing.
  3. Critically appraise how contemporary research is utilised when assessing children and young people.
  4. Compare and contrast comprehensive nursing assessments incorporating child development and culturally responsive family centred care.
  5. Critically evaluate the nursing process within a child health environment.

  1. Assessment techniques for infants, children and young people.
  2. Philosophy of paediatric nursing.
  3. Nursing models.
  4. Writing care plans for children and young people across all age and developmental stages.
  5. Critique process of care plans.
  6. Assessment and management of the deteriorating child/young person.
  7. Management of the deteriorating child in a rural and remote environment.
  8. Communication strategies used with children and young people.

Students will engage in learning experiences via ECU’s LMS as well as additional ECU learning technologies

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

Assessment Extension
