Description

This is the second workplace integrated learning unit in a series of six clinical practice units. Students undertaking this unit will develop a range of skills necessary to provide safe and holistic nursing care at an introductory level. Students will be required to use a reflective approach in the application of principles underpinning the assessment and management of clients in the area of adult nursing.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 1 units from NPP1101

Only students studying courses C33, Y61, Y76, Y19 or Y79 can enrol in this unit.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Undertake the necessary health assessment associated with a client's needs and requirements in either the simulated environment and/or the clinical practice setting.
  2. Develop a plan of care for a client that provides support for one or more identified needs in either the simulated environment and/or the clinical practice setting.
  3. Perform basic care skills in a simulated environment using an evidence-based approach to client care in either the simulated environment and/or the clinical practice setting.
  4. Utilise beginning level medication calculations competency in both the simulated environment and the clinical practice setting.
  5. Assume management of 15-30% of the Registered Nurse Workload appropriate to setting.
  6. Demonstrate professional competence in the workplace setting in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia Standards of Practice for the Registered Nurse relevant to a Stage two learner scope of practice.

Unit Content

  1. Hand hygiene and infection control.
  2. Health assessment including vital signs, musculoskeletal, gait and abdominal assessment.
  3. Planning client care around identified needs using nursing process.
  4. Basic human needs including activity and exercise, safety, hygiene (including eye and oral care), oxygenation, fluid, electrolyte and acid base balance, sleep and pain management, nutrition, elimination.
  5. Beginning level medication calculations competency.
  6. Skin integrity and wound management.
  7. Remote and rural nursing, working in a multicultural environment, working in aged care.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.

WIL - Internship, Clinical or Professional placement (off-campus)

Students will undertake, and be assessed on, authentic activities through engagement with industry and community partners.

Work done in an actual workplace in which the student applies discipline-specific knowledge and skills, supervised by an industry professional separate from an ECU campus or location.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students complete weekly online pre-workshop activities and attend clinical simulation workshops to develop the knowledge, techniques and skills relevant to the stage of scope of practice. Students attend clinical practicum (80 hours).

Students please note: The marks and grades received by students on assessments may be subject to further moderation. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant Board of Examiners.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
